Zach Charbonnet rushes for 98 yards as Seattle Seahawks hand Los Angeles Chargers first loss, 34-17 in Week 4

Seattle, WA - The Seattle Seahawks emerged from a meeting of unbeaten teams with their perfect record intact, creating separation from the Los Angeles Chargers in a 34-17 Week 4 victory.

Seattle improved to 4-0 with a balanced offensive performance that produced 449 offensive yards, including 145 on the ground. The Chargers fell to 3-1, ending their three-game winning streak despite another productive passing performance from Justin Herbert.

The broad shape of the game favored Seattle. The Seahawks established an advantage, answered Los Angeles’ attempts to apply pressure and widened the margin as the contest progressed. Rather than relying on one isolated moment, Seattle repeatedly put itself in scoring position and finished with points on all six of its red-zone trips: four touchdowns and two field goals.

Zach Charbonnet supplied the biggest rushing total, carrying 16 times for 98 yards and a touchdown. His longest run covered 32 yards. Jadarian Price added 39 yards on 10 attempts and scored twice, giving Seattle three rushing touchdowns between the two backs.

"There was a good rhythm to what we were doing," Charbonnet said. "Jadarian was getting his opportunities, I was getting mine, and we stayed productive. To finish those trips with touchdowns as often as we did is something we can build on."

Sam Darnold complemented the rushing production with an efficient day through the air. He completed 31 of 37 passes for 304 yards and one touchdown, posting a 109.9 passer rating. Cooper Kupp was his leading target, catching nine passes for 110 yards and the Seahawks’ receiving touchdown.

Darnold spread the workload while Seattle gradually expanded its advantage. The Seahawks finished with 20 first downs, converted 7 of 13 third downs and were successful on both fourth-down attempts. Those numbers stood alongside the most pronounced statistical difference of the game: Seattle rushed for 106 more yards than Los Angeles.

"We stayed patient and kept getting completions," Darnold said. "The run game was productive, Cooper was finding space, and we were able to keep going back out there and putting drives together. Against a team that came in 3-0, that kind of consistency matters."

Los Angeles generated plenty of production through Herbert. The quarterback completed 29 of 39 passes for 368 yards and two touchdowns, finishing with a 120.4 passer rating. The Chargers totaled 407 offensive yards, but only 39 came on the ground.

Ladd McConkey was the leading figure in the Chargers’ passing game, recording eight catches for 153 yards and a touchdown. His longest reception went for 70 yards. Quentin Johnston added seven receptions for 94 yards, giving Herbert two receivers who approached or surpassed the 100-yard mark.

Still, the Chargers reached the red zone only twice, scoring one touchdown and no field goals on those visits. Seattle, by comparison, made six red-zone trips. Los Angeles converted 5 of 11 third downs and 1 of 2 fourth downs as it tried to respond to a Seahawks team that continued to play from ahead.

"We moved the ball, but yards aren’t the same as points," Herbert said. "Seventeen points wasn’t enough today. We had some good production in the passing game, but we have to get more out of the opportunities we create."

Neither defense recorded an interception. Seattle finished with three sacks, while Los Angeles registered two. The Seahawks also held a 20-16 advantage in first downs, accompanying their 42-yard edge in offensive production.

For Seattle, the result represented more than another strong offensive showing. Both teams arrived in Week 4 at 3-0, and the Seahawks left at 4-0 after handing the Chargers their first defeat. Los Angeles’ unbeaten opening and three-game winning streak ended, while Seattle’s perfect start continued.
