Charlotte, NC - The Carolina Panthers opened their season with a balanced performance on both sides of the ball, rushing for 139 yards and intercepting Caleb Williams three times in a 20-7 Week 1 victory over the Chicago Bears.
Chuba Hubbard carried the largest share of Carolina's offensive workload, rushing 20 times for 110 yards and a touchdown while adding six receptions for 38 yards. His 148 yards from scrimmage led a Panthers offense that finished with 279 total yards and controlled much of its production through the running game and short passing attack.
Hubbard averaged 5.5 yards per carry and broke a long run of 17 yards, giving Carolina its only 100-yard rusher of the game.
"We wanted to establish something we could keep going back to," Hubbard said. "For me, it was about staying patient, taking what was there and helping wherever I could. Starting the season with a win is what matters most."
Bryce Young complemented Hubbard's rushing performance with an efficient afternoon through the air. Young completed 17 of 24 passes for 170 yards without an interception and finished with a 90.6 passer rating. He also added 15 rushing yards.
Darren Waller emerged as Young's primary downfield target, catching seven passes for 106 yards and averaging more than 15 yards per reception. His longest catch covered 36 yards, while Hubbard's six receptions gave Young another reliable option out of the backfield.
Carolina did not record a passing touchdown, but the Panthers protected the football through the air and finished with advantages in total offense, rushing production and first downs.
"We took care of the football and had guys making plays in different areas," Young said. "Chuba gave us a lot on the ground, Darren was making plays in the passing game, and we found ways to keep moving the offense."
The largest difference on the defensive stat sheet came in the turnover column.
Williams threw for 209 yards and a touchdown on 17-of-27 passing, but Carolina intercepted him three times. Mike Jackson accounted for two of those takeaways and totaled 107 interception-return yards, while Nick Scott added the Panthers' third interception and returned it 10 yards.
Jackson's performance highlighted a Carolina secondary that produced multiple impact plays against a Chicago passing attack that otherwise generated some of the Bears' best offensive numbers.
"When the ball comes your way, you have to finish the play," Jackson said. "Getting two of them in the opener is great, but the bigger thing is what we did together defensively. We made plays when we had opportunities."
Derrick Brown added pressure up front with two sacks, giving Carolina the only multi-sack defender on its roster.
Chicago still found production through the passing game, particularly from rookie receiver Luther Burden III. Burden caught six passes for 117 yards, including a 52-yard reception, and accounted for more than half of Williams' passing yardage.
Rome Odunze added five catches for 22 yards and scored Chicago's lone receiving touchdown.
The Bears had far less success on the ground. Chicago finished with 58 rushing yards compared with Carolina's 139, with D'Andre Swift gaining 28 yards on six carries and Kyle Monangai adding 22 yards on two attempts.
Williams' three interceptions ultimately stood out against an otherwise productive passing line. He completed nearly 63 percent of his attempts and generated 209 yards through the air, but his passer rating finished at 59.5.
"There are things offensively that we can take from this, but I have to be better with the football," Williams said. "Three interceptions put too much stress on everybody else. That's something I have to clean up."
Chicago's defense had its own success getting into the Carolina backfield. The Bears recorded four sacks, led by Dayo Odeyingbo with two. Montez Sweat and Grady Jarrett added one apiece, while Jarrett also forced a fumble.
Despite that pressure, Carolina finished with 16 first downs to Chicago's 12 and converted seven of 12 third-down opportunities. The Bears went 3-for-7 on third down and did not convert their lone fourth-down attempt.
The Panthers also made five trips into the red zone, producing one touchdown and two field goals. Chicago reached the red zone four times and came away with one touchdown.
Carolina's strongest advantages ultimately showed up in the areas that shaped the final stat line most clearly: 139 rushing yards, a 7-for-12 third-down performance, 16 first downs and three interceptions on defense. Hubbard provided the 100-yard rushing performance, Waller topped 100 yards receiving, and the Panthers' secondary generated the game's biggest turnover total.
It added up to a convincing start to the season in Charlotte, where Carolina opened Week 1 with a 20-7 victory over Chicago.
