New Orleans, LA - The New Orleans Saints established an advantage, protected it through a low-scoring afternoon and defeated the Cleveland Browns 17-9 in Week 9.

Tyler Shough completed 25 of 41 passes for a game-high 245 yards and a touchdown as New Orleans finished with 351 offensive yards. The Saints recorded 18 first downs, reached the red zone four times and produced points on three of those trips with two touchdowns and a field goal.

The result gave New Orleans consecutive victories after a 1-6 start. Cleveland, which arrived at .500 after eight games, dropped its second straight contest.

New Orleans never created a runaway, but its offense generated enough consistent movement to maintain a relatively steady advantage. Cleveland narrowed the margin and remained competitive on the scoreboard, yet the Browns struggled to put together sustained offense against a Saints defense that recorded four sacks.

The sharpest statistical contrast appeared on third down. New Orleans converted 9 of 18 attempts, while Cleveland went 0-for-13. The Browns did convert twice on three fourth-down attempts, but they finished with only seven first downs and 185 offensive yards.

"We weren’t perfect, and I know there are things I can clean up, but we kept giving ourselves opportunities," Shough said. "Converting nine third downs says a lot about our ability to keep working through a possession. We stayed patient and kept coming back to what was available."

Jordyn Tyson was Shough’s most productive target, catching 10 passes for a game-high 106 yards. His volume provided a reliable element in a passing game that also received four catches for 54 yards from Chris Olave. Deebo Samuel Sr caught Shough’s touchdown pass, finishing with a 7-yard scoring reception.

"When the ball kept coming my way, I wanted to be dependable," Tyson said. "It wasn’t about trying to turn every catch into something huge. It was about getting what was there and being ready for the next opportunity."

The Saints complemented that passing production with 106 rushing yards. Kendre Miller handled a game-high 18 carries, rushing for 62 yards and a touchdown. New Orleans did not produce a run longer than seven yards from Miller, but it continued to involve him as the game developed.

Cleveland’s offense never found comparable balance. Tua Tagovailoa went 12 of 33 for 139 yards and one touchdown, finishing with a 60.0 passer rating. The Browns rushed for 46 yards as a team, with Quinshon Judkins supplying a team-high 35 yards on 11 attempts.

KC Concepcion Jr accounted for much of Cleveland’s passing production. He caught six passes for a team-high 78 yards and the Browns’ lone touchdown, including a game-long 25-yard reception. No other Cleveland player finished with more than 36 receiving yards.

"Zero-for-13 on third down is hard to get past," Tagovailoa said. "We had chances to extend possessions and didn’t do it. When you finish with that number, there are going to be too many stretches where the offense isn’t giving the team enough."

Cleveland’s defense gave the Browns opportunities to remain within striking distance. Kenny Moore II intercepted Shough and returned the ball 19 yards, and the Browns registered three sacks. Jared Verse was credited with one of them. New Orleans still generated 166 more offensive yards and 11 more first downs than Cleveland.

The Saints were also more productive on the ground, finishing with 106 rushing yards compared with Cleveland’s 46. Their 245 passing yards exceeded the Browns’ total by 106, completing an afternoon in which New Orleans held the advantage in both major offensive yardage categories.

For the Saints, the eight-point result continued an encouraging change in direction after six losses in their first seven games. They did not need an explosive scoring total to secure this one; instead, they built a modest cushion and prevented Cleveland from fully erasing it.

The Browns left New Orleans below .500 at 4-5. Their defense produced an interception and three sacks, but the offense’s seven first downs and empty third-down line defined a frustrating Week 9 defeat.

Up Next

New Orleans will remain home in Week 10 to face the Carolina Panthers as it looks to build on consecutive victories. Cleveland returns home and will try to rebound against the Houston Texans.
