Patrick Mahomes passes for 271 yards, rushes for 89 as Kansas City Chiefs beat Indianapolis Colts 22-15 in Week 2

Kansas City, MO - Patrick Mahomes attacked Indianapolis with his arm and his legs, and the Kansas City Chiefs carried an earlier advantage through the closing stages of a 22-15 Week 2 victory over the Indianapolis Colts.

Mahomes completed 25 of 46 passes for 271 yards and a touchdown while adding 89 rushing yards on seven attempts. His production included a 33-yard completion and a 45-yard run, giving Kansas City an explosive element in both phases even though the Colts remained within striking distance on the scoreboard.

The Chiefs finished with 438 offensive yards, a sizable advantage over Indianapolis' 294. Kansas City also recorded 17 first downs, rushed for 167 yards and gradually created enough separation to make the Colts play from behind. Indianapolis narrowed the margin and stayed competitive, but the Chiefs continued to protect their advantage rather than needing a last-second score to settle the game.

Kenneth Walker gave Kansas City another productive option on the ground, rushing 16 times for 67 yards and a touchdown. The contrast between Walker's steady workload and Mahomes' 12.7 yards per carry gave the Chiefs two different statistical profiles in a rushing attack that outgained Indianapolis by 59 yards.

"There were throws I'd like to have back, but I liked that we kept pressing and stayed aggressive," Mahomes said. "The running lanes were there for me at times, and you have to take those yards when they show up. We did enough to finish with the result we wanted."

Rashee Rice led Kansas City's receivers with eight catches for 104 yards and a touchdown. Xavier Worthy added five receptions for 57 yards, including a 26-yard catch. Rice's 100-yard performance stood out in a passing game that spread 25 completions across the Chiefs' offense.

"I kept getting opportunities, and my focus was on being dependable every time the ball came my way," Rice said. "We know there are areas where we can be cleaner, but getting over 100 yards and getting into the end zone feels a lot better when it comes with a win."

The Colts answered with two touchdown passes from Daniel Jones, who went 17 of 36 for 186 yards and finished with an 81.4 passer rating. Alec Pierce caught five passes for 68 yards and a touchdown, while Keenan Allen had five receptions for 51 yards and another score. Indianapolis made both of its completed red-zone scoring trips count, producing touchdowns on two of its three visits inside the Kansas City 20.

Jonathan Taylor paced the Colts' running game with 77 yards on 16 carries, including a 17-yard run. Indianapolis totaled 108 rushing yards, but the passing game did not generate a completion longer than 25 yards. The Colts finished with 13 first downs and converted four of 13 third-down attempts.

"We scored touchdowns when we got down close, but 15 points isn't where we want to finish," Jones said. "The fourth-down number is something we have to own. We had chances to extend possessions and didn't convert them."

Indianapolis went 0-for-3 on fourth down, compared with Kansas City's 1-for-2 mark. The Chiefs also had the better third-down rate, converting seven of 18 opportunities. Neither defense intercepted a pass, and both teams recorded two sacks, leaving the game to be decided without a verified takeaway by either side.

The red-zone numbers offered an unusual contrast. Indianapolis made three trips and scored two touchdowns, while Kansas City reached the red zone once and came away with a touchdown. Even so, the Chiefs accumulated 144 more offensive yards and finished with the seven-point victory.

For Kansas City, the result was built around broad offensive production rather than passing efficiency alone. Mahomes finished with a 79.1 passer rating, but his combined passing and rushing output accounted for 360 yards. Walker and Rice supplied the Chiefs' two verified touchdowns, and Kansas City emerged from Week 2 with a win at home.
