Foxborough, MA - New England did not need the bigger offensive totals to keep its winning streak alive. The Patriots intercepted Cade Klubnik twice, built an advantage and held off the New York Jets for a 27-24 victory in Week 6.
The result extended New England's winning streak to five games. The Patriots entered the week with four consecutive victories, then survived a competitive divisional game in which New York finished with more first downs, passing yards, rushing yards and offensive yards.
The Jets produced 364 offensive yards to New England's 301 and recorded 17 first downs compared with the Patriots' nine. That statistical edge never translated into separation on the scoreboard. New England played from ahead for much of the broad shape of the game, while New York applied pressure and gradually narrowed the margin without completing the rally.
Turnovers provided the clearest contrast between the teams. New England's defense finished with two interceptions and two sacks. The Jets recorded three sacks but did not intercept a pass. Klubnik completed 15 of 30 attempts for 197 yards and a touchdown, but his two interceptions accompanied a 54.4 passer rating.
"There were stretches where we moved it and got what we wanted, but the interceptions are hard to get around," Klubnik said. "In a three-point game, every possession feels bigger when you look back at it. I have to be cleaner with the football."
Geno Smith also contributed at quarterback for New York, completing 6 of 11 passes for 57 yards. He added 28 rushing yards on four carries, including a 20-yard run. Together, the Jets' quarterbacks accounted for the team's 254 passing yards, but New York went 5-for-16 on third down and 2-for-4 on fourth down.
The Patriots had their own problems extending possessions, converting only 2 of 14 third downs. They finished with just nine first downs, yet still generated 27 points in a game that featured scoring production from both the passing and rushing attacks.
Behren Morton handled most of New England's passing work and completed 15 of 29 attempts for 195 yards and one touchdown. Tommy DeVito added 11 yards on 1-of-4 passing. Morton's primary downfield threat was Tyquan Thornton, who caught four passes for 112 yards and a touchdown. Thornton's longest reception covered 69 yards, the longest completion recorded by either team.
"We weren't as consistent as we wanted to be, especially when we got to third down," Morton said. "But we stayed aggressive, and Tyquan gave us a big-play element. Against a team that was moving the ball, we understood that the margin was going to stay small."
Thornton was the only player in the game to surpass 100 receiving yards. Romeo Doubs supplied six catches for 63 yards for New England, giving Morton another steady target alongside Thornton's more explosive production.
The Patriots also received rushing touchdowns from Corey Kiner and Reggie Gilliam. Kiner carried 12 times for 43 yards, while Gilliam gained 37 yards on four attempts and had a long run of 23 yards. New England finished with 95 rushing yards overall.
New York countered with Isaiah Davis, who scored twice on the ground while carrying 21 times for 55 yards. His longest run was six yards, reflecting a workload built on repeated, shorter gains rather than breakaway production. The Jets totaled 110 rushing yards as a team.
"We had chances throughout the game, and we got into scoring range five times," Davis said. "The frustrating part is coming away three points short. Two touchdowns are nice, but the result is what stays with you."
The Jets made five trips to the red zone, scoring three touchdowns and one field goal. New England reached the red zone three times and came away with two touchdowns and a field goal. Kenyon Sadiq led New York's receivers with seven catches for 90 yards and a touchdown, while Romeo Doubs paced the Patriots in receptions.
Neither side consistently owned third down, and the Jets' advantage in offensive production remained one of the game's defining contrasts. New York had 63 more offensive yards and eight more first downs, but New England finished with the three-point victory and another addition to its winning streak.
