Miami Gardens, FL - The Miami Dolphins turned three red-zone trips into three touchdowns and held off the Detroit Lions 21-20 in Week 9, earning a one-point victory after entering the game with a 2-5 record.
Miami established a narrow advantage in a game that never offered much room to breathe. Detroit continued to apply pressure as the matchup developed, eventually trimming the margin to a single point, but the Dolphins finished with the result they needed after losing their previous game.
The defining statistical contrast came inside the 20. Miami reached the red zone three times and scored a touchdown on every visit. Detroit made two red-zone trips, producing one touchdown and one field goal. The Dolphins were also 3-for-3 on fourth down, even as both clubs struggled to sustain drives consistently on third down. Miami converted 6 of 17 third downs, while Detroit finished 6 of 14.
"We weren't perfect, but when we got inside the 20, we finished those possessions," Miami quarterback Kyle McCord said. "Three trips and three touchdowns is something we can build on. In a one-point game, you appreciate every chance you converted."
McCord completed 16 of 28 passes for 190 yards and a touchdown, finishing with an 89.8 passer rating. Marvin Mims Jr. caught three passes for 37 yards and scored Miami's receiving touchdown, while Chris Bell supplied the game-high 67 receiving yards on three catches. Bell's longest reception covered 28 yards, matching the longest completion of the game.
The Dolphins complemented that production with 109 rushing yards. Jaydon Blue handled a game-high 22 carries and ran for 80 yards, including the game's longest rush at 21 yards. Blue and DJ Herman each scored on the ground, with Herman adding 25 yards on nine attempts.
"That was a real workload, and I wanted to stay patient with it," Blue said. "Not every carry is going to open up the same way. You keep taking what is there and try to put the offense in a good position for the next snap."
Miami finished with 299 offensive yards, 23 more than Detroit, and held a 109-84 advantage in rushing yards. The teams each recorded 13 first downs, reflecting how little separated them beyond the final score. Miami's offense did not dominate the afternoon, but it produced enough across the passing and running games to build an advantage and protect it as Detroit narrowed the gap.
Jared Goff posted numbers nearly identical to McCord's. The Detroit quarterback went 16 of 28 for a game-high 192 passing yards, one touchdown and a 90.1 passer rating. His longest completion also went for 28 yards.
Isaac TeSlaa led the Lions with five receptions for 60 yards and caught Goff's touchdown pass. Sione Vaki scored Detroit's rushing touchdown while finishing with 23 yards on eight carries. Jahmyr Gibbs led the Lions on the ground with 52 yards on 15 attempts.
"Losing by one point is difficult because you can look at so many parts of the game," Goff said. "We had opportunities to produce more, and we didn't get enough out of them. That's the part we have to own."
Detroit's defense generated the game's most sustained pass-rushing production despite the loss. The Lions recorded seven sacks without an interception. Aidan Hutchinson led that effort with 2.5 sacks, Derrick Moore added 1.5, and Malcolm Rodriguez contributed half a sack. Rodriguez also forced two fumbles and was credited with four fumble recoveries.
"Seven sacks tells you we were getting pressure, but the scoreboard is still the scoreboard," Hutchinson said. "There are things we can take from the way we played up front, and there are things we have to clean up as a team."
Miami's defense finished with four sacks and no interceptions. With neither defense recording a pick, the game remained centered on field position, red-zone outcomes and two offenses that finished only two passing yards apart.
The victory gave Miami a needed response against a Detroit team that arrived at 4-3 and had won its previous game. For the Dolphins, converting every red-zone possession into a touchdown provided the clearest feature of a 21-20 result that remained competitive throughout.
