Arlington, TX - Bucky Irving turned in one of the season's biggest rushing performances, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defeated the Dallas Cowboys 41-38 in Week 5.
Irving rushed for 200 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries, highlighted by a 92-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter. He also caught four passes for 42 yards, including a 3-yard touchdown reception from Baker Mayfield in the third quarter. Tampa Bay finished with 449 offensive yards, including 210 on the ground.
Chase McLaughlin made a 54-yard field goal in overtime as part of the Buccaneers' three-point victory. The result moved Tampa Bay forward from a 1-3 start, while Dallas absorbed another defeat after entering Week 5 on a three-game losing streak.
"Two hundred yards is a big number, but the result is what you remember," Irving said. "I wanted to be productive every time I touched the ball, whether it was a run or a catch. We needed all of it in this one."
Mayfield completed 28 of 37 passes for 281 yards, two touchdowns and one interception, earning a 103.5 passer rating. His production was spread across an offense that recorded 25 first downs and converted six of nine third downs.
Emeka Egbuka led the Buccaneers' receivers with eight catches for 105 yards and a touchdown. His longest reception covered 30 yards. Together, Egbuka and Irving accounted for both of Mayfield's touchdown passes.
"There are things I'd like back, especially the turnover, but we kept producing," Mayfield said. "Bucky gave us a tremendous day on the ground, and the receivers were available all across the field. Putting up 449 yards tells you how much work the entire offense did."
Dallas generated substantial rushing production of its own. Javonte Williams gained 149 yards on 22 carries and scored on a 4-yard run in the second quarter. The Cowboys finished with 173 rushing yards and 302 offensive yards overall.
The third quarter featured scores from several parts of the Dallas roster. Shavon Revel Jr returned a kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown, and Dak Prescott scored on a 17-yard run. Tampa Bay also received Mayfield's 3-yard touchdown pass to Irving during the quarter.
Prescott finished 17 of 27 for 133 yards and a touchdown, with a longest completion of 27 yards. His touchdown pass went 4 yards to Luke Schoonmaker in the fourth quarter. George Pickens led Dallas with 55 receiving yards on four catches.
"We put 38 points on the board and it wasn't enough," Prescott said. "The passing production wasn't where we wanted it, and that's something we have to own. There were positive things in the run game and on special teams, but the final result is what matters."
Special teams remained prominent in the fourth quarter. Benjamin Morrison returned a kickoff 96 yards for a Tampa Bay touchdown, while Revel recorded his second kickoff-return score for Dallas, this one covering 93 yards. Those returns came in a quarter that also included Irving's 92-yard touchdown run and Prescott's scoring pass to Schoonmaker.
The statistical contrast extended beyond total yardage. Tampa Bay had 25 first downs to Dallas' 19 and went 6-for-9 on third down, compared with 4-for-10 for the Cowboys. The Buccaneers made three touchdowns in five red-zone trips, while Dallas scored three touchdowns and one field goal across six red-zone possessions.
Dallas' defense still produced five sacks and an interception against Mayfield. Tampa Bay recorded one sack and no interceptions, while Antoine Winfield Jr forced and recovered a fumble.
For the Buccaneers, the combination of Mayfield's 281 passing yards, Irving's 200 rushing yards and Egbuka's 105 receiving yards gave the offense multiple sources of production. Tampa Bay left Arlington with the 41-38 victory after the teams combined for 79 points.
