Bryce Young finds Xavier Legette late as Carolina Panthers stun Atlanta Falcons 50-49

Atlanta, GA - The Carolina Panthers had eight seconds left, a five-point deficit and nearly the length of the field in front of them.

Somehow, they still won.

Trailing the Atlanta Falcons 49-44 in the closing seconds, Carolina pushed the ball downfield and stopped the clock by getting out of bounds, leaving the Panthers with one final opportunity. On the last snap, Bryce Young found Xavier Legette in the end zone as the clock hit 0:00, completing a stunning finish and giving Carolina a 50-49 Week 2 victory.

The final touchdown provided an ending worthy of the offensive numbers Young had produced throughout the game. The Carolina quarterback completed 39 of 51 passes for 543 yards and five touchdowns, finishing with a 134.6 passer rating and one interception. He also rushed for 55 yards on only three carries, including a 38-yard gain.

For all of those numbers, Young’s final completion was the one that decided the game.

"We knew there wasn't much time left and there wasn't room to think about anything except the next play," Young said. "We gave ourselves one last chance, Xavier made the play, and when you look up and see zeros on the clock after something like that, it's hard to describe."

Carolina finished with 687 offensive yards, including 531 passing yards and 156 rushing yards. The Panthers recorded 32 first downs and converted 7 of 14 third-down opportunities in a game where both offenses repeatedly produced explosive gains.

Legette led Carolina's receiving group with eight catches for 163 yards and two touchdowns. His 51-yard reception was the Panthers' longest completion, but it was his final scoring reception that became the defining moment of the game.

Jalen Coker added eight receptions for 126 yards and a touchdown, while Darren Waller caught six passes for 43 yards and another score. The distribution gave Young multiple high-volume targets, with Legette and Coker combining for 289 receiving yards.

"When the ball kept coming our way, we wanted to make something out of every opportunity," Legette said. "To have the last one come with the game on the line and no time left makes it different. That's the kind of play you remember."

Chuba Hubbard complemented the passing attack with 97 rushing yards and a touchdown on 19 carries. He posted a long run of 31 yards, while Young's three rushing attempts added another explosive element to an offense that surpassed 680 total yards.

Atlanta nearly matched Carolina's offensive fireworks.

The Falcons accumulated 563 offensive yards, including 356 team passing yards and 207 rushing yards, despite recording only 12 first downs. Their offense leaned heavily on explosive plays, and few players were more productive than quarterback Jack Strand.

Strand completed 13 of 25 passes for 363 yards and five touchdowns. His line also included three interceptions, creating one of the sharpest statistical contrasts of the afternoon. Atlanta generated 363 passing yards from only 13 completions, including a 98-yard completion.

Kyle Pitts Sr. was the Falcons' primary big-play target, turning four receptions into 205 yards and three touchdowns. His 98-yard reception was the longest completion recorded by either team. Zachariah Branch added four catches for 97 yards and a touchdown, while Drake London finished with three receptions for 50 yards and another score.

Bijan Robinson added another massive performance on the ground, carrying 15 times for 211 yards and two touchdowns. He averaged more than 14 yards per attempt and broke a 64-yard run as Atlanta repeatedly created explosive plays from both its rushing and passing attacks.

"There was plenty of production, and we put 49 points on the board," Robinson said. "When you lose it at the very end, none of the individual numbers are what you're thinking about. You're thinking about how close you were to finishing it."

Turnovers provided one of the clearest statistical differences between the teams. Carolina intercepted Strand three times, while Atlanta's defense recorded one interception of Young. Devin Lloyd accounted for two of the Panthers' interceptions and totaled 17 interception return yards.

Carolina's defense also recorded one sack, while Atlanta finished with two sacks and an interception. Neither defense consistently slowed the opposing offense, with the teams combining for 1,250 total offensive yards and 99 points.

The Falcons appeared positioned to survive that shootout when they carried a 49-44 advantage into the final seconds. Carolina, however, managed to give itself one last snap.

That was all Young and Legette needed.

The five-touchdown, 543-yard performance had already made Young the centerpiece of Carolina's offensive explosion. His final throw transformed it into one of the most dramatic finishes of the young season, with Legette securing the touchdown at 0:00 and the Panthers walking away with the only lead that ultimately mattered.
