Mahomes throws 3 TDs as Chiefs beat Broncos 31-16 in Week 1

Kansas City, MO - Patrick Mahomes threw three touchdown passes, Kansas City rushed for 208 yards and the Chiefs opened Week 1 by defeating the Denver Broncos 31-16.

Kansas City established an advantage and gradually created separation in a game featuring productive stretches from both offenses. Denver accumulated 400 offensive yards and remained competitive for portions of the afternoon, but the Chiefs were more productive near the goal line and finished with 438 offensive yards.

The contrast was sharp in the red zone. Kansas City scored touchdowns on three of its four trips, while Denver came away with one touchdown and two field goals over the same number of opportunities. The Chiefs reached 31 points despite converting only 4 of 12 third downs, and they went 1-for-2 on fourth down.

"Three touchdowns in four red-zone trips is the kind of finishing we're looking for," Mahomes said. "There were still possessions where we weren't as clean as we wanted to be, but when we got opportunities down there, we did a good job turning them into points."

Mahomes completed 19 of 36 passes for 230 yards and posted a 100.4 passer rating. His longest completion covered 26 yards, but Kansas City's passing production was spread among several familiar options rather than concentrated in one oversized performance.

Rashee Rice led the Chiefs with six receptions for 85 yards and a touchdown. Travis Kelce added four catches for 32 yards and a score, while Xavier Worthy finished with four receptions for 63 yards. Rice's 26-yard reception was Kansas City's longest completion, and Worthy had a long catch of 24 yards.

"The distribution makes it tough to focus on any one guy," Rice said. "My job is to be available when the ball comes my way and finish the opportunities I get. Starting with a touchdown and a win is something we can build from."

Kansas City also finished with a substantial advantage on the ground, outgaining Denver by 103 rushing yards. Kenneth Walker carried 15 times for 96 yards, including a long run of 22 yards. Mahomes contributed 55 yards on only three rushing attempts and recorded the game's longest run at 41 yards.

The Chiefs' 208 rushing yards stood opposite a Denver attack that produced 105. J.K. Dobbins accounted for nearly all of that total, gaining 104 yards on 15 carries with a long run of 31 yards. His efficiency gave the Broncos one of their best individual performances even as Kansas City widened the overall margin.

Denver leaned heavily on Bo Nix through the air. Nix attempted 53 passes, completing 27 for 295 yards with one interception and a 59.8 passer rating. The Broncos converted 6 of 17 third downs and went 0-for-2 on fourth down.

"We had four trips to the red zone, and one touchdown isn't enough," Nix said. "There were yards out there, but we didn't finish enough possessions. When you throw it that many times, you have to be more efficient and take better care of the ball."

Jaylen Waddle was Nix's leading target, catching eight passes for 88 yards. Troy Franklin added six receptions for 75 yards, giving Denver two receivers with at least six catches and 75 yards. Waddle's 24-yard gain was the Broncos' longest completion.

Kansas City's defense registered four sacks and one interception against Denver's pass-heavy approach. Trevin Wallace recorded two of those sacks. The Broncos finished with two sacks and no interceptions, although Riley Moss forced two fumbles and recovered two.

That defensive activity accompanied a game in which the teams were separated by only one first down: Kansas City had 20 and Denver recorded 19. The difference was wider on the scoreboard, as the Chiefs repeatedly answered Denver's attempts to narrow the margin and carried their advantage through the finish.

For Denver, the opener produced a 100-yard rusher, 295 passing yards and 400 offensive yards, but also a red-zone touchdown rate of one in four and an interception. Kansas City countered with three touchdown passes, three red-zone touchdowns and a running game that surpassed 200 yards.

Week 1 ultimately belonged to a Kansas City team that found multiple avenues of production without requiring a dominant third-down performance. Mahomes supplied three touchdown passes, the Chiefs nearly split their offensive yardage between the pass and run, and Kansas City began the schedule with a 31-16 victory over Denver.
