SANTA CLARA, CA - The San Francisco 49ers and Detroit Lions delivered a game that will be remembered for years across the 2K Online Franchise league. In the first double-overtime playoff game in league history, the 49ers erased multiple deficits and outlasted the Lions 34-28 in a Wild Card classic at Levi's Stadium.
For nearly five quarters, neither team could land the knockout punch. Detroit's explosive passing attack repeatedly stunned San Francisco, while the 49ers answered every critical moment with timely drives and clutch plays from their stars. But after more than 70 minutes of football, it was rookie running back Jordan James who finally ended it.
James burst through the middle for a 4-yard touchdown run with 8:29 remaining in the second overtime period, sending Levi's Stadium into chaos and keeping San Francisco's season alive.
The victory sends the NFC's No. 2 seed into the Divisional Round after one of the most dramatic postseason games the league has ever seen.
Detroit's big-play offense nearly steals it
The Lions entered the postseason as the NFC's No. 7 seed, but for most of the night they looked nothing like an underdog.
Jared Goff carved up the 49ers secondary for 420 passing yards and three touchdowns while posting a 146.7 passer rating. His favorite target was Ja'Lynn Polk, who erupted for 170 yards and a touchdown on just four catches, including a stunning 92-yard touchdown in the second quarter that gave Detroit a 14-0 lead.
Tight end Chigoziem Okonkwo added two touchdown receptions and 103 receiving yards, including a 71-yard score midway through the third quarter that appeared to swing momentum back toward Detroit.
Jahmyr Gibbs was equally dangerous on the ground, rushing for 126 yards and a touchdown, highlighted by a 73-yard sprint to the end zone in the fourth quarter that temporarily restored the Lions' lead.
Detroit finished with 527 offensive yards and averaged over 15 yards per completion, repeatedly torching the 49ers with chunk plays.
49ers rally from the brink
Despite the fireworks from Detroit, San Francisco refused to fold.
Brock Purdy endured a difficult night statistically, throwing two interceptions and absorbing five sacks, but he delivered when the game demanded it most.
One of the game's biggest turning points came late in the third quarter with Detroit leading 21-10. Facing a potential two-score deficit, San Francisco caught a massive break when defensive tackle Alfred Collins exploded through the middle and blocked a Lions field goal attempt with 1:49 remaining in the quarter. Instead of falling behind by 14, the 49ers stayed within striking distance - a moment that became even larger as the comeback unfolded.
Trailing 28-19 late in the fourth quarter, Purdy engineered a frantic comeback drive capped by a 4-yard touchdown pass to George Kittle with just 12 seconds remaining. The 49ers then converted the game-tying two-point attempt on a pass to Brandon Aiyuk, stunning the Lions and forcing overtime. The scoring sequence completed an 18-point fourth quarter for San Francisco.
Defense and turnovers define overtime
Both teams had opportunities to end the game long before double overtime arrived.
San Francisco's defense forced three fumbles and recovered two of them, helping offset Detroit's explosive offense. Fred Warner recorded seven tackles and a sack, while Nick Bosa added a sack and a forced fumble.
Detroit's defense answered with six sacks and two interceptions, including a key takeaway by Kerby Joseph in the fourth quarter. Darren McGuire led the Lions pass rush with two sacks.
But in the end, the Lions simply could not keep San Francisco's rushing attack contained for two full overtime periods.
After exchanging empty possessions deep into the extra sessions, the 49ers finally broke through with the drive that ended the marathon and etched the game into league history.
Up Next
The 49ers now advance to the Divisional Round, where they will face the winner of the Wild Card matchup between the No. 3 Green Bay Packers and No. 6 New York Giants. Detroit's season comes to an end after one of the most competitive and memorable playoff performances in franchise history.
