HOUSTON, TX - The Kansas City Chiefs and Houston Texans delivered one of the greatest Wild Card games in recent 2K Online Franchise history Saturday night at NRG Stadium, a back-and-forth offensive masterpiece that needed overtime before Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs finally survived, 44-41.
The game featured six lead changes, explosive touchdowns from both sides, and a furious late comeback that stunned a Houston crowd already preparing to celebrate an upset.
Kansas City finished with 695 total yards while Houston answered with 626 in an offensive showcase that felt more like a heavyweight title fight than a playoff game.
Mahomes and Chiefs refuse to go away
Every time Houston landed a punch, Mahomes answered.
The Chiefs quarterback turned in one of the defining playoff performances of his career, finishing 36-of-50 for 480 yards and five touchdowns while adding 49 rushing yards. He was sacked five times and absorbed constant pressure throughout the night, but never blinked.
Kansas City trailed 24-17 late in the second quarter after Houston exploded with consecutive touchdowns - Tank Dell's 20-yard touchdown reception with 2:33 left in the half followed by Nico Collins breaking loose for a stunning 70-yard score just 54 seconds later at the 1:39 mark. Houston then added a Justin Tucker field goal with three seconds left before halftime to take the lead into the break.
Yet Mahomes answered immediately.
He hit Marquise Brown for a 54-yard touchdown with 55 seconds left in the second quarter, later connected with Jimmie Searles for a 12-yard score in the third, and engineered two fourth-quarter touchdown drives to keep Kansas City alive.
"We never felt out of it," Mahomes said afterward. "It didn't matter what the score was. We knew if we kept getting possessions we could keep scoring. That's the mentality in this locker room."
Andy Reid praised his quarterback after the game.
"Patrick was special tonight," Reid said. "That was one of those games where every possession mattered and he just kept delivering."
Houston looked ready to pull the upset
For long stretches, it felt like Houston had this game won.
C.J. Stroud was magnificent, throwing for 287 yards and three touchdowns while Joe Mixon punished Kansas City with 122 rushing yards. Jordan Soto became one of the stars of the night with 115 receiving yards, including a momentum-shifting touchdown late in regulation.
The Texans entered the fourth quarter tied 27-27, then delivered what looked like the knockout sequence.
First came Kris Gibson's 25-yard touchdown run with 8:24 remaining, putting Houston ahead 34-27.
Then came the moment NRG Stadium thought had sealed it.
Stroud found Jordan Soto deep downfield for a 62-yard touchdown with 5:10 remaining, extending Houston's lead to 41-27.
NRG Stadium erupted.
Houston had scored 14 unanswered points and led by two touchdowns with barely five minutes left.
"We believed we had them," Texans coach DeMeco Ryans said afterward. "Our guys fought all night. That locker room is hurting because they gave everything."
Final minute chaos sends game to overtime
But Mahomes wasn't done.
Kansas City answered immediately with a 1-yard touchdown pass to Jake Briningstool with 2:18 remaining, cutting the deficit to seven.
After a defensive stop, Mahomes got one last chance.
He converted key throws to Jimmie Searles and Xavier Worthy before finding Marquise Brown for a 17-yard touchdown with only 18 seconds left, stunning Houston and forcing overtime.
Houston still had time.
Stroud quickly moved the Texans near midfield, but Kansas City's defense finally held, sending the game into overtime.
The Texans received the opening possession in extra time but stalled after negative runs and pressure from Kansas City's defense forced a punt.
Mahomes took over.
He calmly marched the Chiefs into range, setting up Harrison Butker's 38-yard field goal with 6:22 remaining in overtime to end the thriller.
"Honestly, I was exhausted," Butker admitted with a smile. "But that's what you dream about as a kicker."
Stars everywhere in offensive masterpiece
This game felt like an All-Star showcase.
Marquise Brown finished with 114 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Xavier Worthy added 102 yards and a score. Jimmie Searles totaled 94 yards and a touchdown despite battling through early mistakes.
Houston countered with:
- Joe Mixon - 122 rushing yards
- Jordan Soto - 115 receiving yards, touchdown
- Nico Collins - 80 receiving yards, touchdown
- Tank Dell - touchdown reception
- C.J. Stroud - three passing touchdowns
Despite the loss, Ryans made sure to recognize his team.
"This group battled," Ryans said. "Nobody quit. We went toe-to-toe with one of the best teams in football."
The Chiefs survive.
Houston leaves wondering what could have been.
