Minneapolis, MN - Jordan Mason gave Minnesota a commanding presence on the ground, rushing for a game-high 219 yards as the Vikings defeated the Indianapolis Colts 51-38 in Week 7.
Mason carried 27 times, the most rushing attempts by any player in the game, and scored two touchdowns. His longest run covered a game-best 59 yards. Minnesota finished with 368 rushing yards as part of a 544-yard offensive performance, giving the Vikings a clear statistical identity in a game that featured 89 combined points.
The production extended beyond Mason. Aaron Jones Sr added 80 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries, giving Minnesota two running backs with multiple rushing scores. The Vikings finished with 29 first downs and nearly doubled Indianapolis in rushing yardage, although the Colts generated 170 yards of their own on the ground.
"When you get that many opportunities, you want to stay productive and make every carry count," Mason said. "The line gave us room, Aaron was productive, and we kept getting good work from the whole group. Putting up that kind of rushing total is something we can build on."
Indianapolis received explosive rushing production from Kareem Hunt and Riley Leonard. Hunt gained 95 yards and scored a touchdown on only eight attempts, including a 43-yard run. Leonard added 75 yards and two rushing touchdowns on six carries, finishing with 343 combined passing and rushing yards.
Through the air, Kyler Murray completed 13 of 22 passes for 187 yards and a touchdown. Jauan Jennings caught the scoring pass and led Minnesota with 55 receiving yards on two receptions, including a 53-yard catch. Murray was intercepted twice and finished with a 64.0 passer rating, but Minnesota still reached 51 points with its extensive rushing output and five red-zone touchdowns.
"The interceptions are the part I have to own," Murray said. "You never want to put the ball in danger. At the same time, we had a lot of production around me, especially from the backs, and we finished with the result we wanted."
The Colts held the passing advantage at the team level, finishing with 236 passing yards compared with Minnesota's 176. Leonard completed 16 of 30 throws for a game-high 268 yards, one touchdown and one interception. His longest completion went for 66 yards, also the longest pass play of the game.
Tyler Warren was Leonard's leading target, recording a game-high 130 receiving yards on four catches. Warren accounted for the game-long 66-yard reception, while Josh Downs caught four passes for 45 yards and Indianapolis' lone receiving touchdown.
"We moved the ball and had some big gains, but there are areas where the numbers have to be better," Leonard said. "Three of 10 on third down isn't where we want to be, and we didn't get enough touchdowns out of our red-zone trips. There's plenty for us to correct."
Efficiency separated the teams in several important categories. Minnesota converted 7 of 12 third downs, while Indianapolis went 3-for-10. Both teams made seven trips to the red zone, but the Vikings scored five touchdowns and one field goal on those possessions. The Colts finished their red-zone opportunities with two touchdowns and one field goal.
The Vikings also recorded four sacks and an interception on defense. Indianapolis finished with one sack and two interceptions, giving the Colts three takeaways when Murray's two interceptions are combined with the Vikings' one interception of Leonard. Minnesota nevertheless finished with 138 more offensive yards and 11 more first downs.
Both teams entered the matchup on two-game winning streaks. The result extended Minnesota's run to three consecutive victories while ending Indianapolis' streak at two. For the Vikings, it was a high-output performance defined by 368 rushing yards, four rushing touchdowns from Mason and Jones, and a 13-point victory.
