Landover, MD - The New York Giants finally ended their wait for a victory.

Cam Skattebo rushed for 145 yards and a touchdown, while New York intercepted four passes in a 24-14 Week 5 win over the Washington Commanders. The Giants improved to 1-4 and snapped the four-game losing streak that opened their season.

The breakthrough did not come with an overwhelming advantage in offensive production. New York finished with 364 offensive yards, only 17 more than Washington, and the Commanders held a 241-183 edge in team passing yards. The Giants instead paired a productive rushing performance with a defense that collected four interceptions and four sacks.

Skattebo supplied the largest share of New York's 181 rushing yards. He carried 22 times, averaged more than six yards per attempt and recorded a long run of 22 yards. His 145-yard performance accounted for most of a ground-game advantage over Washington, which finished with 106 rushing yards.

"Getting the first win is what matters," Skattebo said. "You want the rushing yards and you want to finish runs, but all of that feels a lot better when the team gets the result. We had been waiting for this one."

Jaxson Dart completed 19 of 33 passes for 185 yards with one interception and a 60.7 passer rating. His longest completion covered 29 yards, matching the longest reception recorded by Malik Nabers, who led the Giants' listed receivers with four catches for 62 yards. Tyrone Tracy Jr added two receptions for 37 yards and also gained 23 yards on two rushing attempts.

New York's passing numbers were modest, but the offense finished with nearly even production through the air and on the ground. The Giants also recorded 20 first downs compared with Washington's 16.

The sharpest statistical contrast came from the interceptions. Jayden Daniels threw four of them while completing 17 of 35 passes. He still generated 270 passing yards and two touchdowns, including a longest completion of 67 yards, but finished with a 54.1 passer rating.

Washington's defense produced takeaways of its own. Dart threw one interception, and Will Levis went 1 of 3 for 24 yards with another interception. The Commanders finished with two interceptions and three sacks, giving the game six combined interceptions and seven combined sacks.

"The yardage and the touchdowns don't erase four interceptions," Daniels said. "That's too many times giving the ball away. I have to be more responsible with it and give us a cleaner performance."

Neither offense consistently converted its third-down opportunities. New York went 1 for 12, while Washington finished 4 for 13. The Giants were also 1 for 3 on fourth down, compared with 1 for 2 for the Commanders.

The red-zone totals offered another unusual element to the result. New York was credited with seven trips but no touchdowns and one field goal, while Washington scored one touchdown on two red-zone appearances. Despite those efficiency figures, the Giants finished with the 10-point victory.

Washington's 347 offensive yards included 106 on the ground. Jacory Croskey-Merritt carried 12 times for 38 yards, while Rachaad White gained 39 yards on three attempts. The Commanders' production was tilted more heavily toward their passing game, but Daniels' four interceptions accompanied his two touchdown passes.

For New York, the imperfections were still evident. The Giants threw two interceptions, struggled on third down and did not record a red-zone touchdown. The result nevertheless changed the direction of their early-season record after four consecutive losses.

"It wasn't a clean passing day, and going 1 for 12 on third down is something we have to look at," Dart said. "But we're leaving with our first win. Now the challenge is to take that result and be better in the areas where we left too much out there."

The Giants came to Landover as the league's remaining winless team in this matchup and left at 1-4, their first victory secured by a 24-14 final.
