SALEM, OR - EA’s Madden NFL 27 title update arrived October 21, bringing a substantial collection of fixes and improvements. The Gridiron Notes are a buffet: salary-cap surgery for Franchise mode, coverage repairs on defense, four new Aaron Rodgers celebrations, and 47 new helmet facemasks. Here’s what actually matters.

The Gridiron Notes went up October 20, with the patch following on the 21st, right as the Most Feared season kicked off in Ultimate Team. The headline act for long-term players is a deep round of Franchise salary-cap and CPU roster-management fixes - a direct continuation of work EA says started in the previous update.

One important caveat from the dev team: to receive every salary-cap fix in this update, EA recommends starting a new Franchise league. Everything else applies to existing leagues automatically. What that means for an established league like ours - more on that below.

Franchise Gets the Love

If your favorite part of Madden is playing general manager, this update was made for you. The CPU finally started acting like it studied tape: teams are less likely to let key players stroll into free agency, thanks to fixes for the player-mindset bugs that used to block re-signing negotiations cold. The front office got smarter about money, too - inflated contract bonuses and careless handling of mega-deals got reined in, teams stopped restructuring contracts for no reason, and the logic for cutting underperforming veterans with big cap savings got sharper.

Under the hood, the cap math got a serious audit. Carryover space now factors into CPU decisions, incentive calculations on extensions, releases, and trades were corrected, and a void-year restructure loophole that let users dodge contract payments is closed. Fifth-year option money now lands on guaranteed salary instead of signing bonus, the game enforces minimum offers on franchise and transition tags, and there’s a new “Next Year’s Cap” readout in extension talks for the planners among us.

Player development got attention as well: the wild progression spikes of multi-season sims were toned down, early retirements got another look, and a bug that kept CPU players displaying Wear and Tear effects even when the setting was disabled is fixed. And for the custom crowd - draft classes download and import properly again, roster imports stop mangling guaranteed contract years, and Auto Reorder finally updates the depth chart like it’s supposed to.

take full advantage of the salary-cap changes. That doesn’t mean commissioners need to abandon their current seasons - it means some cap-related improvements may not carry over completely. Season 36 rolls on; just know the fine print.

On the Field

Defense won the gameplay portion of this patch. The biggest fix targets Quarters coverage: in Pounder, Roll Ring, Roll King, and Cover 9, safeties now match vertical routes correctly no matter what the underneath defenders are doing - a repair competitive players have been asking for. The Double or Nothing ability took a slight hit across all tiers, trimming those instant pass-rush wins without killing the ability outright.

Hurry-up offense got two quality-of-life repairs: no more phantom auto-subs in rare situations, and audibling no longer lets you dodge the defensive package reset. Defensive backs also kicked their bad habit of swapping assignments in Combo coverage just because a receiver stayed in to block. And in the small-but-satisfying department, kickoff lane assignments now flip for left-footed kickers, and defenders you “untarget” are completely ignored by the AI.

Shiny New Toys

The fun stuff: four Aaron Rodgers celebration animations, motion-captured with Rodgers himself in EA’s studio, available in Play Now, Franchise, and Ultimate Team - and equippable on your Superstar avatar. Then there’s the equipment haul: 47 new facemasks across the Axiom, Speedflex, and Light helmets, including signature Bain masks.

Stadiums got plenty of love too. SoFi Stadium got a reskin, MCS Field picked up Most Feared seasonal dressing, Highmark and Nissan stadiums got authenticity passes, and the Mercedes-Benz Stadium field got fresh paint. The NFL Rivalries program brought reskins for Detroit, Tennessee, and Jacksonville, and the Stade de France joined the game as an international venue. Mascot uniforms were updated for the Eagles, Lions, Bengals, Rams, and Falcons. Superstar and Ultimate Team rounded things out with stability and UI fixes, from Showdown disconnects to pack-count displays.

Up Next

EA closed the notes with a promise rather than a period: “We will continue monitoring your feedback on salary-cap management and CPU roster decisions as Franchise leagues progress.” Back in September’s notes, the team also had CPU salary-cap recovery - CPU teams spiraling into cap hell - sitting on the radar. Translation: the cap saga isn’t over. This patch is a chapter, not the finale.
