Jalen Hurts throws 4 TDs as Philadelphia Eagles rout Washington Commanders 44-21 in Week 1

Philadelphia, PA - Jalen Hurts opened the season with four touchdown passes and one of the most efficient performances possible, directing the Philadelphia Eagles to a 44-21 Week 1 victory over the Washington Commanders.

Hurts completed 22 of 30 passes for 372 yards and finished with a 154.4 passer rating. Philadelphia established an advantage, continued to widen the margin and had created clear separation by the finish. Washington produced stretches of offense along the way, but the Eagles repeatedly maintained control of the broader flow.

The statistical difference was especially pronounced through the air. Philadelphia finished with 476 offensive yards, including 372 passing, while Washington totaled 388 offensive yards. Both teams recorded 17 first downs, but the Eagles generated 88 more offensive yards and turned their passing production into four touchdowns.

Hurts spread those scores among three receivers. Marquise Brown caught two passes for 77 yards and two touchdowns, DeVonta Smith finished with 10 receptions for 153 yards and a score, and Makai Lemon added two catches for 80 yards and a touchdown. Lemon recorded a 70-yard reception, the longest completion of the game, while Brown had a long reception of 59 yards.

"There were different guys giving us production, and that's what you want from the passing game," Hurts said. "We stayed aggressive, we were efficient, and we didn't let up once we had an advantage. Scoring 44 in the opener gives us a good standard, but there are still details we can clean up."

Smith was the steady volume option within Philadelphia's collection of explosive numbers. His 10 catches were the most by either team, and his 153 receiving yards nearly doubled the total of every other Eagles receiver. Brown and Lemon required only four combined receptions to account for another 157 yards and three scores.

"When the opportunities kept coming, I wanted to be dependable with them," Smith said. "Jalen was putting the ball where we could work, and the whole group contributed in different ways. You could feel that we had several answers in the passing game."

The Eagles also received 85 rushing yards from Saquon Barkley, who carried 20 times and had a long run of 22 yards. Hurts added 17 yards on four attempts. Philadelphia's 104 rushing yards trailed Washington's 129, but the Eagles held a substantial advantage in passing production.

Philadelphia's 44-point total came with an unusual red-zone line. The Eagles made three trips inside the Washington 20, scoring no touchdowns and one field goal on those opportunities. The passing game still produced four touchdowns overall, and Philadelphia's collection of long gains supplied a distinctly explosive dimension.

Washington quarterback Jayden Daniels completed 21 of 38 passes for 259 yards. His longest completion went for 24 yards, and he finished with two interceptions and a 54.6 passer rating. Jaylin Lane led the Commanders with six catches for 66 yards, while Stefon Diggs contributed five receptions for 58 yards.

The Commanders found more room on the ground, with Jacory Croskey-Merritt rushing 14 times for 69 yards. Washington also went 2-for-2 on fourth down and reached the red zone five times, coming away with two touchdowns and two field goals. Drew Stevens made both of his field-goal attempts, including a long of 37 yards, and converted his only extra-point attempt.

"We moved the ball in some areas, but two interceptions are difficult to overcome when the other side is scoring like that," Daniels said. "There were completions available, but we didn't get enough out of the passing game. That starts with me. The yardage doesn't mean as much when the result looks like this."

Philadelphia's defense recorded both interceptions, with Riq Woolen and Cooper DeJean each picking off Daniels. DeJean returned his interception 13 yards. The Eagles also finished with one sack, while Nolan Smith Jr. recorded a forced fumble and two fumble recoveries.

Washington converted four of 13 third downs, compared with Philadelphia's four conversions in 10 attempts. The Commanders continued to compete while the margin expanded, but the Eagles closed Week 1 with the game's dominant quarterback line and a 23-point victory at home.

For Philadelphia, the opener was defined by Hurts' 372 passing yards, four touchdowns and 154.4 rating. The Eagles leave Week 1 with a 44-21 win and an offense that produced 476 yards.
