ARLINGTON, TX - The three-peat chase is still alive in Dallas.
The defending back-to-back Super Bowl champion Cowboys are headed back to the NFC Championship Game after defeating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 41-31 in a physical Divisional Round battle at AT&T Stadium. Dallas leaned on a dominant rushing attack, three interceptions from its defense, and a late fourth-quarter answer to survive a Tampa Bay team that refused to go away.
The Cowboys, led by head coach Andres Perez, are now one win away from reaching a third straight Super Bowl. Dallas will host the Green Bay Packers next week in the NFC Championship Game.
"We knew this was going to be a four-quarter game," Perez said. "Tampa Bay has too much talent and too much experience to just disappear. Our guys stayed composed, trusted the run game, and made the plays we needed late."
Dallas Starts Fast, But Tampa Bay Answers
Dallas opened the game like a team determined to remind the league why it is still the standard.
Dak Prescott struck first with a one-yard touchdown pass to Jake Ferguson, giving the Cowboys an early 7-0 lead. After Tampa Bay answered with a 48-yard field goal from Jason Sanders, Jaydon Blue delivered the first major swing of the night, breaking loose for a 50-yard touchdown run that pushed Dallas ahead 14-3 late in the first quarter.
Blue's burst gave the Cowboys control early, but Tampa Bay settled in during the second quarter. Baker Mayfield capped one drive with a six-yard touchdown run, then later found Bucky Irving for a 13-yard touchdown pass to tie the game at 17-17. Dallas did not take the lead before halftime; Brandon Aubrey's 32-yard field goal with one second left simply pulled the Cowboys even heading into the break.
"We had to reset a little bit," Prescott said. "They punched back, and it was tied at halftime. Nobody panicked. We just knew we had to keep playing our style."
Buccaneers Take the Lead Before Dallas Responds
Tampa Bay carried its second-quarter momentum into the third.
Mayfield opened the second-half scoring with a five-yard touchdown pass to Chris Godwin Jr., giving the Buccaneers their first lead of the night at 24-17. It was a key moment in the game, because Dallas had watched an 11-point first-quarter advantage turn into a seven-point deficit.
The Cowboys answered with one of their biggest passing plays of the night. Prescott found CeeDee Lamb for a 23-yard touchdown, tying the game at 24-24 and restoring some balance before the fourth quarter.
"CeeDee made a big-time play when we needed it," Perez said. "That was not a game where we were throwing it all over the field, so when those chances came, we had to hit them."
Prescott finished 9-of-23 for 131 yards and two touchdowns. The numbers were not flashy, but he avoided interceptions and helped Dallas stay patient while the ground game carried the night.
Dallas Wins It on the Ground
The Cowboys took control again in the fourth quarter with the formula that has carried them through so many postseason moments.
Blue scored his second touchdown of the night on a three-yard run with 6:16 remaining, giving Dallas a 31-24 lead. Aubrey followed with a 34-yard field goal to extend the advantage to 34-24, but Tampa Bay answered again when Mayfield hit Dale Doherty for a 29-yard touchdown with 1:34 left.
That cut Dallas' lead to 34-31 and put real pressure back on the defending champions.
The response came immediately.
On the Cowboys' next offensive snap after the kickoff, Javonte Williams broke free for a 38-yard touchdown run with 1:24 remaining, restoring the two-score lead and putting Dallas in control for good. Williams finished with 132 rushing yards and a touchdown on 16 carries, while Blue added 67 yards and two touchdowns on only four attempts.
"Our offensive line was moving people all night," Williams said. "When the game got tight, we wanted the ball. That last run was about finishing the job."
Dallas finished with 209 rushing yards, a number that told the story of the game better than any other stat.
Turnovers Prove Too Costly for Tampa Bay
Tampa Bay moved the ball well enough to win, but the Buccaneers could not overcome the turnovers.
Mayfield completed 31 of 45 passes for 296 yards and three touchdowns, but he was intercepted three times. Jerry Banks grabbed one in the first quarter, while Trevon Diggs came away with two in the second half, including a late interception after Williams' final touchdown that ended Tampa Bay's last comeback hopes.
"They kept fighting, so we had to keep closing windows," Diggs said. "In the playoffs, one possession can change everything. We wanted to make sure we were the ones making that final play."
Bucky Irving was one of Tampa Bay's most effective weapons, finishing with 46 rushing yards and nine catches for 64 yards and a touchdown. Tez Johnson added seven catches for 65 yards, while Godwin and Doherty each caught touchdown passes.
Todd Bowles credited his team's fight, but pointed directly to the turnovers as the difference.
"We battled back from 14-3, took the lead in the third quarter, and gave ourselves a chance late," Bowles said. "But against a team like Dallas, three interceptions are too much to overcome."
The Three-Peat Chase Continues
The Cowboys are back in familiar territory.
For the third straight year, Dallas will play in the NFC Championship Game. This time, the stakes are even bigger, with the Cowboys trying to become the first team in league history to win three consecutive Super Bowls.
Perez said the team understands the moment, but he also made it clear that Dallas cannot afford to look beyond Green Bay.
"We respect what Green Bay has done," Perez said. "They earned their way here, and we earned our way here. Now it comes down to one game for the conference."
The Buccaneers head into the offseason after a tough loss in a game where they erased an early deficit, took a second-half lead, and still had a chance late. For Dallas, the win keeps the dynasty alive and sets up another massive postseason matchup at AT&T Stadium.
