Seattle, WA - Sam Darnold delivered an exceptionally efficient passing performance, and the Seattle Seahawks remained undefeated with a 34-16 victory over the San Francisco 49ers in Week 5. Darnold completed 15 of 18 passes for 256 yards and two touchdowns, finishing with a 155.7 passer rating as Seattle improved from 4-0 to 5-0.
The sharp contrast at quarterback was one of the clearest features of the matchup. While Darnold finished with only three incompletions, Brock Purdy went 23 of 31 for 180 yards with two interceptions and a 61.2 passer rating. Seattle recorded three sacks and two interceptions, while San Francisco’s defense produced four sacks without an interception.
"The efficiency is what stands out to me," Darnold said. "You want to be decisive, put the ball where it needs to go and give different guys opportunities. There are still things to clean up, but that’s the kind of accuracy we expect from ourselves."
The final margin was 18 points even though the teams were separated by only eight offensive yards. Seattle finished with 330 offensive yards to San Francisco’s 322, while the 49ers held a 17-15 advantage in first downs. San Francisco also rushed for 169 yards, nearly doubling Seattle’s 91.
Seattle owned the better third-down rate, converting 5 of 10 attempts compared with San Francisco’s 3-for-10 showing. The 49ers went 1-for-3 on fourth down. Inside the red zone, the Seahawks recorded one touchdown and two field goals across six trips. San Francisco reached the red zone twice, scoring one touchdown and no field goals.
Darnold’s receiving production was spread among several notable contributors. Rashid Shaheed caught three passes for 65 yards and a touchdown, while Jaxon Smith-Njigba had two receptions for 44 yards and a touchdown. Cooper Kupp added 73 yards on two catches, including a 63-yard reception that stood as Seattle’s longest completion.
The Seahawks’ rushing work came primarily from Zach Charbonnet, who carried 14 times for 63 yards and a touchdown. His longest run covered 11 yards. Seattle’s passing production was much larger than its rushing output, but Charbonnet still accounted for one of the team’s touchdowns.
San Francisco received a major rushing performance from Christian McCaffrey, who gained 138 yards on 16 carries and scored a touchdown. His 73-yard run was the longest rushing attempt listed for either team. Purdy added 29 yards and a touchdown on four carries, giving the 49ers substantial ground production despite the loss.
Through the air, Ricky Pearsall led San Francisco’s wide receivers with six catches for 68 yards. George Kittle caught seven passes for 56 yards, and Purdy’s longest completion went for 24 yards. The quarterback completed nearly three-quarters of his attempts, but the two interceptions remained a glaring part of the final line.
"I have to be better with the football," Purdy said. "We had production in different areas, especially with the run game, but two interceptions put a lot on the rest of the team. That’s something I have to own."
For Seattle, the victory continued an unbeaten opening to the season. The Seahawks entered Week 5 at 4-0 and emerged with another multi-score win, an efficient quarterback performance and a 5-0 record.
