Arizona Cardinals total 405 offensive yards in 23-20 Week 5 win over Detroit Lions

Glendale, AZ - The Arizona Cardinals generated 405 offensive yards, converted 10 third downs and built enough separation to finish off a 23-20 Week 5 victory over the Detroit Lions.

Arizona held a modest advantage through much of the game before Detroit narrowed the margin. The Cardinals never created a runaway, but their offense consistently produced more volume, finishing with 20 first downs to the Lions' nine and outgaining Detroit 405-280 in offensive yards.

Jacoby Brissett completed 29 of 47 passes for 272 yards and a touchdown. He spread the ball among several targets, with Michael Wilson delivering the biggest receiving total of the game. Wilson caught eight passes for 116 yards, including a 24-yard reception, while Marvin Harrison Jr. added seven catches for 62 yards and a touchdown.

"There were a lot of opportunities to stay involved, and I wanted to be dependable every time the ball came my way," Wilson said. "We didn't get much breathing room on the scoreboard, so every possession felt important."

The Cardinals also finished with 133 rushing yards. Jeremiyah Love handled the heavier workload, carrying 18 times for 69 yards, while Tyler Allgeier supplied 60 yards and a touchdown on seven attempts. Allgeier's longest run covered 38 yards.

Arizona made three trips to the red zone and scored each time, producing one touchdown and two field goals. The Cardinals went 10-for-17 on third down, compared with Detroit's 6-for-16 showing.

Those numbers reflected a game in which Arizona gradually developed an advantage without putting Detroit out of range. The Lions continued to answer the pressure and reduced the final difference to three points, even though their offense had substantially fewer first downs and 125 fewer offensive yards.

Detroit's passing production was concentrated around Amon-Ra St. Brown. He finished with five receptions for 97 yards and a touchdown, including a 63-yard catch that matched Jared Goff's longest completion. Goff went 17-for-32 for 187 yards and a touchdown, finishing with an 81.1 passer rating.

Jahmyr Gibbs gave the Lions another scoring option with 56 rushing yards and a touchdown on nine carries. His longest run went for 26 yards. Goff also contributed 25 yards on four rushing attempts as Detroit finished with 93 rushing yards.

"We had some production, but not enough of it across the whole game," Goff said. "A play here or there can give you a spark, but we needed to be steadier. When you finish with nine first downs, you know there were too many stretches where we didn't sustain things."

The Lions were perfect on their two fourth-down attempts, but Arizona's defense recorded four sacks and did not allow Goff to throw an interception. Josh Sweat accounted for 2.5 sacks, and DaQuan Jones recorded another.

"Four sacks is a good number for the group, but it was still a three-point game," Sweat said. "That tells you there wasn't room to relax. We stayed aggressive and kept working to affect the quarterback."

Detroit produced the game's only interception. Kerby Joseph picked off Brissett and returned the ball 23 yards. Brissett nevertheless completed passes to multiple parts of Arizona's offense and finished with a 75.8 passer rating.

The statistical contrast was stark for a game decided by a field goal. Arizona held the advantages in passing yards, rushing yards, first downs, offensive yards and third-down conversions. Detroit countered with touchdowns from St. Brown and Gibbs, an interception from Joseph and enough scoring to remain within one possession at the finish.

For Arizona, the outcome was a 23-point offensive performance paired with four defensive sacks. For Detroit, the loss came despite Goff avoiding an interception and the offense converting both of its fourth-down opportunities. The Cardinals walked away with the 23-20 result after preventing a competitive game from fully slipping away.
