Aidan Hutchinson records three sacks as Detroit Lions top New Orleans Saints 27-20 in Week 1

Detroit, MI - The Detroit Lions built an advantage, absorbed a response from New Orleans and opened Week 1 with a 27-20 victory over the Saints. Detroit finished with 365 offensive yards, while Aidan Hutchinson supplied the most imposing individual performance of the day with three sacks, a forced fumble and two fumble recoveries.

The Lions created some separation during the game's middle stages and then protected their advantage as New Orleans narrowed the margin. It was a competitive game without a dramatic final-possession resolution, and Detroit consistently maintained enough room to avoid surrendering the lead in the broad closing stretch.

There was little between the teams in overall production. Detroit recorded 19 first downs and outgained New Orleans 365-340 in offensive yards. The Lions also held a 150-133 edge in rushing yards and finished with 215 passing yards, eight more than the Saints.

Jahmyr Gibbs led Detroit's backfield with 72 yards on 15 carries, including a 32-yard run. Isiah Pacheco added 41 yards on eight attempts and scored a rushing touchdown. Together, they gave the Lions two different options in a ground game that produced the larger share of Detroit's statistical advantage.

"We had different guys contributing, and that matters in a game where neither team is running away with it," Gibbs said. "You want every touch to put the offense in a better position, whether it turns into a big gain or not."

Jared Goff completed 22 of 37 passes for 215 yards and was intercepted once, finishing with a 64.5 passer rating. His longest completion went for 24 yards. Jameson Williams was Detroit's most productive receiver, catching seven passes for 79 yards, while Amon-Ra St. Brown added three receptions for 40 yards.

The Lions' offense did not have a particularly efficient third-down performance, converting 2 of 9 opportunities. Detroit was successful on its lone fourth-down try, however, and turned both of its red-zone trips into touchdowns.

"There are things I need to clean up, especially with the turnover and some missed chances," Goff said. "But we finished both times we got into the red zone, and we came out of Week 1 with the result we wanted."

Hutchinson's production gave the Detroit defense a disruptive presence throughout the broader flow of the game. The Lions recorded four sacks as a team, with Hutchinson accounting for three of them. He also forced one fumble, recovered two and deflected a pass. New Orleans did not record a sack.

"Three sacks is a good number, but I'm just as pleased with getting on two loose footballs," Hutchinson said. "Those are chances you can't assume somebody else will finish. When the ball is there, you have to secure it."

New Orleans still generated sustained offensive production, particularly through Travis Etienne Jr. The running back carried 20 times for 130 yards and broke a 31-yard run, delivering the game's top rushing total despite the loss.

Tyler Shough completed 20 of 35 passes for 207 yards and two touchdowns, posting a 93.3 passer rating. He was not intercepted, although Detroit's pass rush brought him down four times. Juwan Johnson caught four passes for 39 yards and a touchdown, while Noah Fant had three receptions for 14 yards and another score. The Saints converted both of their red-zone opportunities into touchdowns.

"We were productive in some areas, and we finished when we got close," Shough said. "The frustrating part is that we still ended up seven points short. There's a difference between having good stretches and putting together enough to win."

The Saints converted 4 of 13 third downs and went 2-for-3 on fourth down. Their defense also produced the game's lone interception when Kool-Aid McKinstry picked off Goff and returned the ball 14 yards. Those contributions accompanied an offense that finished with 16 first downs and remained competitive as New Orleans reduced Detroit's earlier cushion.

Etienne's 130-yard performance and Shough's two touchdown passes gave the Saints several encouraging numbers, but the final result belonged to a Detroit team that finished with modest advantages in first downs, rushing yards, passing yards and offensive yards. The Lions leave Week 1 with a 27-20 victory at home.
