INGLEWOOD, CA — The Los Angeles Rams pulled off a stunning 31-28 victory over the previously undefeated San Francisco 49ers, thanks to a clutch Joshua Karty 61-yard field goal as time expired. The Rams, who came into the game at 1-4, have now won two straight, while the 49ers drop to 5-1 after their first loss of the season.
Game Recap
The game started with an explosive 69-yard touchdown run by Kyren Williams, giving the Rams an early lead. The 49ers quickly responded with a short touchdown pass from Brock Purdy to Deebo Samuel Sr., but Williams found the end zone again with a 47-yard run to put the Rams ahead 14-7 at the end of the first quarter.
Both teams traded scores in the second quarter, with Matthew Stafford connecting with Tyler Higbee for a five-yard touchdown pass before Christian McCaffrey powered into the end zone for a one-yard rushing touchdown. The Rams held a 21-14 lead at halftime.
The 49ers came out strong in the third quarter, as Purdy threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to George Kittle to tie the game. The Rams answered back with Stafford connecting on a 68-yard bomb to
Puka Nacua. But before the quarter ended, McCaffrey hauled in a 10-yard touchdown pass from Purdy, evening the score at 28-28.
With both defenses tightening up in the fourth quarter, it seemed like the game was heading to overtime—until Karty nailed a game-winning 61-yard field goal as time expired, handing the Rams the thrilling victory.
Key Stats
Purdy threw for 256 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception while completing 65.9% of his passes. McCaffrey was a dual-threat force, rushing for 80 yards and a touchdown while also catching eight passes for 73 yards and another score.
For the Rams, Stafford was efficient, throwing for 207 yards and two touchdowns. Williams stole the show on the ground with 142 rushing yards and two touchdowns, averaging an incredible 15.8 yards per carry. Nacua led all receivers with six catches for 113 yards and a touchdown.
On defense, Nick Bosa and De’Vondre Campbell each recorded a sack for the 49ers, while John Johnson III had an interception for the Rams.
Up Next
The Rams will stay in the NFC West for another divisional showdown as they travel to face the Seattle Seahawks next week. The 49ers will return home to take on the New Orleans Saints as they look to bounce back from their first loss of the season.
