SANTA CLARA, CA — The San Francisco 49ers proved why they’re the reigning NFC champions with a commanding 31-6 win over the Atlanta Falcons at Levi’s Stadium. In a highly anticipated rematch of last season’s Wild Card game, the 49ers left no doubt about their dominance, overwhelming the Falcons in every phase of the game.

Game Recap

After last season’s historic comeback victory against the Falcons, the 49ers wasted no time asserting control in this matchup. Quarterback Brock Purdy threw for 145 yards, including a touchdown pass to Brandon Aiyuk, and Christian McCaffrey continued his stellar form with 135 rushing yards and a touchdown. “We wanted to make a statement, and we did that today,” said Purdy after the game.

The Falcons, on the other hand, struggled to find consistency. Quarterback Michael Penix Jr. had a rough outing, completing just 20 of 45 passes for 177 yards and two interceptions. Tight end Kyle Pitts was one of the few bright spots for Atlanta, recording six catches for 73 yards. “It’s tough,” admitted Falcons head coach Chuck Davis, who appeared visibly tilted on the sideline. “We didn’t execute, and we let the game get away from us.”

The 49ers’ defense was relentless, sacking Penix four times and forcing two turnovers. Linebacker Fred Warner led the way with an interception return for 94 yards, while rookie defensive end Keion White continued to impress with a sack and several pressures. “Our defense is hungry,” said head coach Jeffrey Jarin. “They played with a championship mindset today.”

Key Stats

Purdy’s efficient performance was complemented by McCaffrey’s dominance on the ground, averaging 5.4 yards per carry. Wide receiver Jauan Jennings was Purdy’s top target, with three catches for 78 yards. Defensively, Warner’s interception and White’s sack highlighted a suffocating effort that held Atlanta to just 235 offensive yards.

The Falcons’ offense relied on Bijan Robinson, who managed 67 rushing yards on nine carries, but their passing game failed to find any momentum.

Injuries

The Falcons avoided injuries, but the 49ers weren’t as fortunate. Defensive end Yetur Gross-Matos suffered a torn labrum and is expected to miss four weeks, according to postgame reports.

Up Next

The Falcons (1-1) will look to rebound as they travel to Philadelphia to face the Eagles. Meanwhile, the 49ers (2-0) head to Seattle for a crucial NFC West matchup against the Seahawks.
