KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith struggled against his former team, and  San Francisco kicker Phil Dawson kicked a last second field goal to give the 49ers a 10-7 victory in a preseason game Friday night.

San Francisco 49ers backup quarterback Pat White had a good showing late in the 4th quarter. The 49ers were down 0-7 with just over 4 minutes to go in the game, White converted a critical 3 and 5 on the Chiefs 12 yard line that helped the 49ers tie the game.

Following two change of possessions and with the game all tied up, the Chiefs had a chance to  drive down the field and try to get within range of a game winning field goal. However, Chiefs backup quarterback Chase Daniels was picked off by 49ers Donte Whitner on their own 38 yard line.

With only 34 seconds left in the game and within just a few yards of field goal range, coach Michael Nguyen put his running game to use. 49ers running back Kendall Hunter on four plays picked up 27 yards and ate up valuable clock time, the 49ers called a time out with 1 second left in the game, then Phil Dawson kicked a 28 yard field goal for the win.

After the game 49ers head coach Michael Nguyen said he was happy with the way the team played, specially with some of the players that don’t get a whole lot of time which should make this weeks roster cuts tough.
