ARLINGTON, Texas - The Dallas Cowboys leaned on grit, defense, and timely quarterback sneaks to grind out a 20-9 win over the Washington Commanders, remaining unbeaten at 7-0 while handing their NFC East rival another frustrating loss. Behind Dak Prescott's two rushing touchdowns and a relentless pass rush, Dallas controlled the line of scrimmage and the clock, winning their seventh straight game.
The pivotal second quarter
Dallas finally broke through early in the second. Prescott capped a clock-eating march with a 1-yard QB sneak at 8:19. The momentum spike fizzled when Brandon Aubrey's extra point was blocked, keeping the score 6-0.
Washington responded with a long drive led by Jayden Daniels, who connected with Noah Brown and Austin Ekeler to move into scoring range, but the Cowboys defense stiffened near the goal line. Matt Gay's 23-yard field goal cut the deficit to 6-3 at 3:38.
Dallas answered with another punishing drive featuring Javonte Williams runs and quick passes to the flat. Prescott again snuck in from the 1-yard line with 35 seconds remaining, and Aubrey's kick made it 13-3 heading into halftime. "Sneaks are about will," Prescott said. "Credit to our big guys-twice they got us the yard we needed."
Second-half clampdown
Washington added a pair of short field goals from Gay in the second half, but Dallas' front seven took over. Kenny Clark, Damone Clark, Osa Odighizuwa, and Marist Liufau combined for five sacks, routinely collapsing the pocket on Daniels. "We wanted to make him play inside the walls," Kenny Clark said. "That's our game-power and discipline."
The Cowboys sealed the win late in the fourth quarter when Hunter Luepke plunged in from a yard out to make it 20-9. "That was our identity drive," the Dallas head coach said. "Tight sets, pad level, finish."
Workhorse of the day
Williams was the engine of the offense, rushing for 126 yards on 21 carries and adding two receptions for 28 more. "Javonte's balance kept us ahead of the sticks," Prescott said. "He made the tough ones look easy."
By the numbers
Dallas finished with 175 rushing yards, converted 8 of 12 third downs (66.7%), and scored touchdowns on three of four red-zone trips. Washington totaled 366 yards but came up empty in the red zone (0 TDs on four trips) and settled for three field goals. Aubrey went 2-for-3 on PATs (one blocked).
Up Next
The Cowboys travel to Denver next week to take on the Broncos. The Commanders head to Kansas City to face the Chiefs.
