SANTA CLARA, CA — The New York Jets sent a loud message in Week 1, handing the reigning Super Bowl champion San Francisco 49ers a humbling 45-20 defeat. Coming off a disappointing 6-11 season, the Jets looked like a completely different team, led by veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who threw for 325 yards and 3 touchdowns.
“We’ve been putting in the work all offseason, and it showed tonight,” Rodgers said. “I’m proud of the way the guys played, especially on the road against a great team like San Francisco. But it’s just one game, and we have a long way to go.”
Rodgers Shines, Purdy Struggles
Aaron Rodgers, looking to bounce back from last season’s struggles, was in vintage form. Despite a single interception, Rodgers orchestrated the Jets’ offense masterfully, connecting with Jeremy Ruckert for a 104-yard performance that included a touchdown. Breece Hall added balance to the attack with 81 rushing yards and a score, keeping the 49ers’ defense on its heels all night.
On the other side, 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy, fresh off leading San Francisco to a Super Bowl victory last season, had a rough start to the new campaign. Although he tallied 277 passing yards and two TDs, his three interceptions were too much for the Niners to overcome. Purdy did connect with Christian McCaffrey for a 67-yard receiving touchdown, while McCaffrey also added 61 yards on the ground with a rushing score. Brandon Aiyuk had a strong showing as well, racking up 129 yards on 6 receptions.
Key Performers
Brandon Aiyuk’s 129-yard performance highlighted the 49ers’ offensive output, though he couldn’t find the end zone. McCaffrey’s dual-threat ability was on full display with 171 total yards and two touchdowns. George Kittle chipped in with 3 receptions for 38 yards and a score.
Defensively, the 49ers saw strong performances from De’Vondre Campbell (5 tackles, 1 sack) and Leonard Floyd (1 sack), but they couldn’t slow down the Jets. Charvarius Ward managed 4 tackles and 2 pass breakups, but the secondary struggled to contain Rodgers.
Injuries
The 49ers suffered a significant blow with wide receiver Deebo Samuel going down due to broken ribs. He’s expected to miss six weeks. Talanoa Hufanga and Aaron Banks both exited the game with torn labrums, sidelining them for multiple weeks. For the Jets, wide receiver Mike Williams and tight end Tyler Conklin were injured. Williams left with an undisclosed injury, and Conklin was ruled out after a PCL sprain, with both expected to miss just a week.
Coaching Debut for Jarin
New 49ers head coach Jeffrey Jarin, making his debut after coaching the Los Angeles Rams, admitted there was a lot of work to be done. “It wasn’t the start we wanted, obviously,” Jarin said. “We’re still figuring out a lot of things as a team, but we know this group is capable of bouncing back. The season’s just getting started, and we’ll learn from this.”
Up Next
The Jets will remain on the road to face the 1-0 Tennessee Titans next week, while the 49ers will head to Minnesota to take on the 1-0 Vikings.
