Christian Kirk records 104 receiving yards as San Francisco 49ers edge Los Angeles Rams 31-27 in Week 1

Inglewood, CA - Christian Kirk surpassed 100 receiving yards, and the San Francisco 49ers opened Week 1 with a 31-27 victory over the Los Angeles Rams despite facing persistent defensive pressure and committing two turnovers.

San Francisco finished with 408 offensive yards, gaining 273 through the air and 135 on the ground. Los Angeles totaled 338 offensive yards, including 243 passing and 95 rushing. The 49ers also recorded 17 first downs to the Rams' nine, giving the winner a clear statistical advantage in both yardage and opportunities to extend possessions.

The result did not come with a clean quarterback performance. Brock Purdy completed 23 of 38 passes for 273 yards and one touchdown, but he threw two interceptions and finished with a 69.2 passer rating. The Los Angeles defense recorded seven sacks, with Myles Garrett accounting for three of them.

"There's plenty I need to clean up," Purdy said. "Two interceptions and seven sacks are not numbers we want attached to our offense. At the same time, we finished with the result we wanted, and now we have a clear picture of what has to improve."

Kirk supplied San Francisco's biggest receiving total, catching five passes for 104 yards and a touchdown. His longest reception covered 60 yards. Ricky Pearsall worked as the higher-volume target, finishing with nine catches for 77 yards and a long of 15.

"I wanted to be productive every time the ball came my way," Kirk said. "There were only five catches, so the yards after those opportunities meant a lot. Getting a touchdown and leaving with a win is a good way to start."

The 49ers also received meaningful production from their backfield. Christian McCaffrey rushed 12 times for 78 yards, averaging 6.5 yards per carry and breaking a 34-yard run. Jordan James added 37 yards on four attempts and scored a rushing touchdown, with 24 yards on his longest carry.

That rushing output gave San Francisco 40 more yards on the ground than Los Angeles. The 49ers converted five of 14 third downs, while the Rams went 3-for-12 and failed on their only fourth-down attempt. Those figures accompanied the broader first-down and offensive-yardage advantages San Francisco held at the finish.

Los Angeles still produced several of the game's sharpest individual passing numbers. Matthew Stafford completed 15 of 25 attempts for 243 yards and two touchdowns, posting a 119.2 passer rating. His longest completion went for 83 yards.

Davante Adams was Stafford's top target, turning five receptions into 144 yards and a touchdown. Adams' 83-yard reception was the Rams' longest of the game. Colby Parkinson added five catches for 50 yards and a touchdown, giving Los Angeles two receivers with scoring receptions.

"The production is nice, but the score is what stays with you," Adams said. "We had explosive yards, we got touchdowns in the passing game, and we still came away four points short. That's the part that has to sit with us."

Kyren Williams carried most of the rushing workload for the Rams, finishing with 71 yards and a touchdown on 23 attempts. Los Angeles reached the red zone four times and came away with two touchdowns and two field goals. San Francisco had three red-zone trips, scoring two touchdowns without a field goal.

The defensive numbers created one of the most striking contrasts in the final box score. Los Angeles recorded seven sacks and two interceptions, while San Francisco finished with two sacks and no interceptions. Emmanuel Forbes Jr. had one of the Rams' interceptions, returning it 21 yards and adding a pass deflection.

Garrett's three sacks were the highest individual total on either side, but the production came in a loss.

"Seven sacks and two interceptions are the kind of numbers you expect to feel good about," Garrett said. "Right now, they're hard to enjoy. We have to look at everything together, because the only number that ultimately counts is 31-27."

San Francisco's Week 1 performance contained obvious areas for review, particularly the sacks and interceptions, but it also featured a 408-yard offense, a 100-yard receiver and a productive rushing combination. Most importantly for the 49ers, those numbers accompanied a 31-27 victory in Inglewood.
