ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. - The Week 9 matchup between the Buffalo Bills and Kansas City Chiefs had everything - explosive plays, defensive grit, and a dramatic overtime that ended without a winner. The rain poured all night at Highmark Stadium, but neither team relented, battling to a 27-27 tie that left both fan bases equal parts relieved and frustrated.
Trading haymakers in the rain
Buffalo jumped ahead early with a short Tyler Bass field goal and a 19-yard touchdown from Josh Allen to Keon Coleman, giving the Bills an early 10-0 lead. But the Chiefs answered with two quick scores - a 67-yard bomb from Patrick Mahomes to Marquise Brown and a 32-yard strike to Isiah Pacheco - to take a 14-10 lead into halftime.
After the break, James Cook III ignited the crowd with a 79-yard touchdown run to reclaim the lead 17-14. Mahomes countered with another scoring toss to Pacheco from 15 yards out. The fourth quarter turned wild again - rookie Ray Davis punched in a 4-yard touchdown to make it 24-21, only for Mahomes to connect with Xavier Worthy on a 66-yard go-ahead score. The Chiefs' 2-point try failed, leaving it 27-24. With 28 seconds left, Bass nailed a 28-yard field goal to force overtime.
Defensive grit defines overtime
In the downpour, both defenses dug in. Buffalo's opening drive ended near midfield after a costly holding penalty. Mahomes moved Kansas City into Bills territory with completions to Travis Kelce and Pacheco before a fumble cut the march short - one of the game's biggest momentum swings. Allen and Cook kept pushing on the ensuing possession, reaching the red zone, but a pair of penalties and a mismanaged clock denied Bass a final attempt as overtime expired.
Standout performances
Mahomes finished 24-of-35 for 410 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception, posting a 124.7 rating. Brown (4 catches, 102 yards, TD) and Worthy (3 for 95 and a score) both went over 90 yards, while Pacheco totaled 103 yards from scrimmage (52 rushing, 51 receiving) and two touchdowns. "We had our chances to finish it," Mahomes said. "We've got to close it out."
Allen completed 38 of 54 for 407 yards, one touchdown, and one interception, adding 48 yards on the ground. Cook carried 18 times for 141 yards and a score, plus 10 catches for 66 yards. Tight end Dalton Kincaid led all receivers with 107 yards on seven receptions. "We fought through the elements," Allen said. "Just wish we could've finished the job."
Stats and storylines
The Bills outgained the Chiefs 554 to 455 in offense (679 to 573 total yards) but lost the turnover battle 2-1. Buffalo converted 4 of 14 third downs (28.6%) and 3 of 5 on fourth (60%), while Kansas City went 6 of 11 (54.5%) and 1 of 2 (50%). The Bills ran for 147 yards compared to the Chiefs' 61, controlled the clock, and recorded three sacks to Kansas City's none. "Both teams emptied the tank," Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. "It's a shame somebody had to come away without the win - well, I guess neither of us did."
