Philadelphia, PA — The San Francisco 49ers came into their week eight match-up against the Philadelphia Eagles with a record of 3-4 and were just 1-4 in their last five games. They knew in order to be successful in this one they were going to have to play a perfect road game and that they did.
The 49ers defense shutout the 6th best offense in the league by pressuring Eagles QB Carson Wentz. Wentz, who has been averaging 25 pass attempts per game, had just 12 attempts in this one and completed only four of those passes for a total of 54 yards “Our defense stepped up today. They had a good week of practice and every single one of those men contributed to today’s win” said 49ers head coach Michael Nguyen.
The defense didn’t just stop the Eagles passing game, they also kept the leagues best running back LeGarrette Blount in check the entire game. Blount has been averaging 105 yards per game, but in this game the 49ers kept him to just 58 yards, his lowest of the season.
The only bad news for the 49ers is the injury sustained by their star MLB NaVorro Bowman. Bowman suffered some broken ribs and is expected to miss at least five weeks.
The win moves the 49ers back to a .500 record at 4-4 as they reach the mid way point of the season and will now head home to prepare for another big game against the Arizona Cardinals. Meanwhile for the Eagles, they’ll fall to 5-3 and a full game behind the NFC East leader, the Dallas Cowboys. The Eagles will need to get their offense back in order in the coming week, as they will be taking on the Denver Broncos at home next week.
