NEW ORLEANS, LA - In a game where style points didn't matter, the New Orleans Saints leaned on defense, Alvin Kamara and a timely burst from Spencer Rattler's legs to grind out a 17-13 win over the Atlanta Falcons at the Superdome. The result snaps a two-game skid for Kellen Moore's team and hands Chuck Davis' Falcons a frustrating divisional loss despite a hefty yardage edge.
Kamara's early punch and McKinstry's takeaway set the tone
Atlanta actually had the first big chance of the afternoon, but Michael Penix Jr. forced a throw over the middle on the Falcons' opening drive and Khyree Jackson McKinstry made him pay, jumping the route for an interception that flipped field position and energy inside the dome.
New Orleans immediately cashed in. Behind a renewed commitment to the ground game, Kamara slashed through the heart of the Falcons' front and finished the short field with a touchdown run, giving the Saints a 7-0 lead and settling Rattler into the game.
From there, Moore stayed patient. The Saints never turned the afternoon into a shootout, instead leaning on methodical drives, play-action and quick throws to Chris Olave and Brandon Cooks while trusting their defense to keep Atlanta out of rhythm.
Falcons move the ball, but settle for too many threes
For long stretches it looked like the Falcons might take control. Penix shook off the early interception to throw for 311 yards and a touchdown, and Bijan Robinson was a two-way problem, piling up 76 rushing yards and adding chunk plays as a receiver out of the backfield.
Atlanta finished with 393 total yards to New Orleans' 318, repeatedly driving into scoring range. But those marches kept stalling in the red zone. Younghoe Koo drilled all three of his kicks, including a pair of field goals, yet that was the problem for Davis' club: where the Saints finished drives with sevens, the Falcons were too often walking away with threes.
The one time Penix and his weapons broke through, it was vintage Atlanta. The lefty ripped a seam shot to Kyle Pitts for a 105-yard receiving day that included the Falcons' lone touchdown, briefly putting them in front and silencing the Superdome. New Orleans' defense responded, tightening up on third down and forcing Penix into a second interception as the game tightened in the fourth quarter.
Rattler's legs and Olave's hands power the fourth-quarter answer
Rattler's stat line won't turn heads by itself-17-of-30 for 200 yards with an interception-but he grew stronger as the game went on, especially when Moore began moving the pocket and mixing in designed runs.
Olave was his go-to target, repeatedly winning against single coverage on the outside and finishing with 8 catches for 121 yards. Those chunk gains set up the drive that defined the game: a fourth-quarter march where Rattler calmly worked through his progressions, scrambled to keep plays alive and then pulled the ball down on a zone read, slicing into the end zone for the go-ahead rushing touchdown.
Blake Grupe's earlier field goal and perfect work on extra points gave New Orleans the breathing room it needed. From there the Saints' front pinned its ears back, with Carl Granderson and Demario Davis helping collapse the pocket and force hurried throws as Atlanta's final comeback attempts fizzled out near midfield.
What the win means
For Moore and the Saints, the victory is exactly what they needed coming off the bye: a physical, grind-it-out divisional win that pushes them back above .500 at 6-5 and reinforces the identity they've been chasing-balanced offense, heavy doses of Kamara and an opportunistic secondary.
For Davis' Falcons, now 7-4, the loss will sting in film review. They moved the ball, Robinson and Pitts looked like stars, and the defense held New Orleans to just 17 points on its home field. But two interceptions, fourth-down failures and a long afternoon of settling for Koo field goals instead of touchdowns told the story of a team that couldn't quite finish.
Up Next
