CINCINNATI, OH - Rookie defensive end Shemar Stewart remains unsigned and off the field amid a contract standoff with the Cincinnati Bengals that has become the offseason's most prominent rookie holdout. The No. 17 overall pick says he won't practice until his deal guarantees the same protections that past Bengals first-rounders received.

What's Holding Him Up?

Stewart's agent, Zac Hiller, explained on SiriusXM that the issue stems from additional language in the contract that could void future guarantees under vague conditions-changes that deviate from what recent Bengals picks received. Stewart's camp insists he's simply asking for the same level of financial protection as players like Amarius Mims and Myles Murphy.

Stewart himself fired a shot at the team, saying, "I'm not asking for nothing y'all have never done before. But y'all just want to win arguments more than winning more games." He made clear he won't sign until the contract language matches precedent.

Skipping Camp, Staying in the Room

Though he's enrolled in meetings and staying sharp off-field, Stewart hasn't taken part in any on-field drills. He left mandatory minicamp early amid the impasse. Bengals coach Zac Taylor said their last conversation was "positive," but acknowledged the situation is "unusual".

Bigger Picture in the Bengals Brass

Stewart isn't alone-edge rusher Trey Hendrickson is also absent as he pursues a long-term extension. Bengals center Ted Karras, an NFLPA vice president, commented that Stewart's stance fits within player interests to protect guaranteed money.

Why It Matters

If Stewart remains unsigned into training camp, he risks missing out on preseason reps and game experience. Under league rules, if he hasn't signed by early August, he could skip the entire season-or even re-enter the draft in 2026.

What Comes Next

With less than six weeks until camp opens, both sides will need to compromise. As the last of the team's 2025 first-round picks still unsigned, Stewart's holdout is gaining traction-and could set a precedent for future rookie negotiations.
