INDIANAPOLIS, IN — Jim Irsay, the passionate and influential owner of the Indianapolis Colts, passed away peacefully in his sleep on May 21, 2025, at the age of 65. His death marks the end of an era for the Colts and the NFL community at large.
A Life Dedicated to Football
Born on June 13, 1959, in Lincolnwood, Illinois, Irsay was immersed in football from a young age. His father, Robert Irsay, purchased the Baltimore Colts in 1972 and relocated the franchise to Indianapolis in 1984. Jim joined the Colts’ front office in 1982 and became the NFL’s youngest general manager at 24. Following his father’s death in 1997, he assumed full ownership of the team.
Under Irsay’s leadership, the Colts experienced a golden era. The team secured 10 division titles, made 18 playoff appearances, and won Super Bowl XLI in the 2006 season with quarterback Peyton Manning and head coach Tony Dungy at the helm. Irsay’s commitment to excellence helped transform the Colts into one of the league’s most respected franchises.
Beyond the Gridiron
Irsay was known for his eclectic interests and philanthropic endeavors. A fervent music enthusiast, he amassed an extensive collection of rock-and-roll memorabilia, including guitars owned by legends like Jimi Hendrix and Prince. His “Jim Irsay Collection” toured the country, blending concerts with exhibits of historic artifacts.
His philanthropic efforts were equally notable. The “Kicking The Stigma” initiative, launched by the Irsay family, aimed to raise awareness and support for mental health issues, contributing over $25 million to related causes. Irsay’s generosity extended to various community projects in Indiana, including donations to the Irsay Family YMCA and Riley Hospital for Children.
Personal Struggles and Resilience
Despite his public successes, Irsay faced personal challenges, including battles with addiction. He was open about his struggles, using his experiences to advocate for mental health awareness and support. His transparency and resilience endeared him to many and underscored his commitment to helping others facing similar issues.
A Legacy Continued
Irsay is survived by his three daughters-Carlie Irsay-Gordon, Casey Foyt, and Kalen Jackson-who have been actively involved in the Colts’ operations. Following his passing, they are expected to continue his legacy, ensuring the team’s stability and ongoing commitment to excellence.
Tributes from the NFL Community
The NFL community mourned Irsay’s passing with heartfelt tributes. Former Colts quarterback Peyton Manning expressed his sorrow, stating, “Jim was more than an owner; he was a friend and mentor.” NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell praised Irsay’s contributions to the league, highlighting his role in building Lucas Oil Stadium and his service on various NFL committees.
Jim Irsay’s impact on the Indianapolis Colts and the broader NFL landscape is indelible. His passion for the game, commitment to his community, and efforts to destigmatize mental health issues leave a lasting legacy that will continue to inspire.
