EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - In a rain-soaked slugfest at MetLife Stadium, the Dallas Cowboys leaned on efficiency from Dak Prescott and a bruising ground game to grind out a 17-7 victory over the New York Jets on Sunday night.
Prescott, Schoonmaker Set the Tone
Prescott was clinical despite the heavy downpour, completing 18 of 22 passes for 146 yards and two touchdowns. Both scores went to tight end Luke Schoonmaker, who capitalized on red-zone opportunities with touchdown catches of two and one yards in the second quarter.
"The weather was rough, but that's football in the elements," Prescott said. "We stayed on schedule, converted third downs, and executed when it mattered."
Schoonmaker added, "Coach Perez told me to be ready in tight spaces. Dak trusted me twice near the goal line, and we made it count."
Jets Struggle to Find Rhythm
For New York, quarterback Justin Fields delivered an efficient line-9 of 14 passing for 136 yards and a touchdown, plus 54 yards rushing-but costly mistakes and limited third-down success (3 of 9) doomed the Jets' chances.
The lone Jets touchdown came late, when Fields found Xavier Gipson for a five-yard score with under a minute remaining. By then, the Cowboys' defense had already dictated the flow.
Head coach Aaron Glenn lamented the missed opportunities: "We moved the ball, but turnovers and field position hurt us. Against a team like Dallas, you can't afford those mistakes."
Cowboys Control the Trenches
Dallas ran for 151 yards as Javonte Williams (56 yards), Jaydon Blue (32 yards), and Miles Sanders (41 yards) kept the chains moving. Prescott chipped in with 26 rushing yards, including a 19-yard scramble that sparked a second-quarter scoring drive.
"We wanted to impose our will on the ground," Cowboys coach Andres Perez said. "With the rain, we knew this game would come down to physicality and ball security. Our backs answered that call."
Defensively, Dallas forced two fumbles and recovered one, holding New York to just nine first downs. Safety Malik Hooker came up with a key recovery in the second half to stall a Jets drive.
Weather Plays a Factor
The rain never let up, turning the game into a test of patience and discipline. Both sides combined for five fumbles, though only three were recovered. "It felt like every snap was a fight just to get a clean handle," Jets running back Breece Hall said after finishing with 42 yards on 16 carries.
Up Next
The Cowboys (3-2) return home in Week 6 to host the Los Angeles Rams, looking to build momentum after two straight wins. The Jets (2-3) will try to regroup at MetLife when they face the Denver Broncos.
