Calvin Johnson celebrating after scoring his second touchdown of the night.

What a wacky way to begin season 6!  The Lions came into the game without its two best defensive line (Suh, Fairley) and even without them held the Giants running attack to anemic numbers (8 carries for 33 yards).  The Giants decided to bench Eli Manning in favor of Ryan Nassib and their first half performance paid the price.  Manning came in to lead the Giants to two scores and took a late fourth quarter 14-7 lead.  Midway through the first half Reggie Bush was knocked out of the game (out 4 weeks ) but Joique Bell came in and picked up the slack.  Early in the third quarter Matthew Stafford was injured as well but should return in time for next weeks game.  Unbelievably, Dan Orlovsky (yes, I said Dan Orlovsky) came in and went 5/5 for 45 yards and threw the game tying touchdown to Calvin Johnson with under two minutes to play.

The Giants seemed to be running out the clock when Eli Manning took off out of the pocket and was stripped with under a minute left in the game.  The Lions recovered and after a first down they were able to run the clock down to allow Nate Freese to kick the game winning 36 yard field goal as time expired.

We caught up with Coach Jellison after game and he was stunned at the outcome.  “Sometimes that ball will bounce just right for you.  Today seemed to be one of those days.  I am proud of our second string guys stepping up and getting a huge win for us to start this season. ”

Game stats:
